I was on our deck looking for the subject of my next painting. I looked up and thought the trees made a nice frame for the sky, so decided that would be it, and here it is! And recently I got metallic, shimmery watercolor paint so used that in this painting. You can see light reflecting off of some of the leaves.
My first thought was Twila Paris’ song “Lookin’ Up”. The chorus is “Lookin’ up, lookin’ up ‘Cause I know where my help comes from.” You can listen to the whole song here.
Looking up is more about heart posture than physical posture. God will be found by those who are truly looking for Him. Deuteronomy 4:29 "But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him if you search for Him with all your heart and all your soul.” This is Moses speaking to the children of Israel before they entered the Promised Land. The ‘from there’ is where they will be scattered to. Deuteronomy 4:25-31 tells why it will happen.
Jesus also looked up when He gave thanks for the bread and fish in Matthew 14, Mark 6, and Luke 9. He didn’t need to say anything out loud because He knew that God always heard Him, but Jesus sometimes prayed out loud for the disciples’ benefit, as in the story of Lazarus in John 11:41-42.
